Government Canyon State Natural Area, Backcountry
Joe Johnston Route > about a quarter mile up Wildcat Canyon Trail and back
Today's photos:
The Backcountry at Government Canyon State Natural Area has beautiful, if at times rugged, trails that wind through the canyons and hills on the southeastern corner of the Texas Hill Country. All of the features of the Balcones Escarpment that formed the Hill Country are on display here.

Taking the Next Step
Thursday, August 23, 2012
Yesterday evening I received official notification from the Alamo Area Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist that I have been accepted for the 2012 Fall Training Program for Master Naturalists. Classes begin Thursday, September 6.
One of my primary goals for quite sometime has been to complete this training to become a Certified Master Naturalist*. The course is an intense ten weeks, but I am looking forward to the challenge. As a matter of fact, to say I am ecstatic is an understatement of the highest order.
To celebrate the beginning of this new endeavor, here is another series of photos from my walk along the San Antonio River this past Friday, August 17:

* "The [Texas Master Naturalist] Mission: To develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. Many communities and organizations rely on such citizen volunteers for implementing youth education programs; for operating parks, nature centers, and natural areas; and for providing leadership in local natural resource conservation efforts. In fact, a short supply of dedicated and well-informed volunteers is often cited as a limiting factor for community-based conservation efforts." - http://txmn.org/

Today's photos:
The angle of the late afternoon sun combined with the water remaining in the wetland from Saturday night's rain made everything sparkle.
