Salado Creek Greenway, Robert Tobin Park Trailhead downstream
Today's photos:
As I began walking along the trail today, it was looking like this would be another walk dominated by wildflowers and butterflies. And there certainly is nothing wrong with that. But I have learned to expect the unexpected.
The very large white-tailed buck was quite unexpected as I rounded a bend in the trail. I don't think he was expecting to see me either. White-tailed deer are very plentiful in the upper Salado Creek watershed, so it was not a complete surprise, but this is the first time I have encountered one this far downstream.

Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, Panther Springs Creek trails
Today's photos:
As we move further into autumn, the sun traverses the sky at an increasingly lower angle. Shadows deepen and fill the dry creek beds in late afternoon. Edges soften. Even if the temperatures warm into the low 80s (F), there is no mistaking the season. The angle and quality of light define autumn in South Texas

Among all the butterflies, there were a few dragonflies and damselflies along the Leon Creek South Greenway on my walk of Monday, October 15:

San Antonio River, Mission Reach, Theo Ave Trailhead downstream
Today's photos:
Last week the newest section of the San Antonio River Mission Reach, Phase 2, Greenway trail opened with a trailhead on Theo Ave. This section of the trail goes downstream along the bank on the west side of the river, crosses ConcepcÃon Creek over a pedestrian bridge and joins the main greenway trail at the pedestrian bridge over the river just upstream from Mission Rd. The closest parking to the Theo Ave trailhead is in ConcepcÃon Park. This new section of trail completes a loop from the ConcepcÃon Park trailhead.
The new section of trail remains closer to the river bed than the trail along the east side of the river. It also provides a new angle of view to the large embayment area in this section of the river.
