Cool In The Woods

Friday, July 6, 2012

Jack Judson Nature Trail, Olmos Basin in Alamo Heights

Today's photos:

It was in the low 90s in the shade (if there had been any) in the parking lot at the trailhead at midday today. But it is always cooler in the woods (both literally and figuratively) in the summer. I didn't have a thermometer with me to verify it. I have no doubt, by the time I was only a few paces into the woods, the temperature was 80° (F) or so.

Another Mile South, A Closer Look

Thursday, July 5, 2012

This is part two of the photos taken on my walk yesterday, Wednesday, July 4, along the recently opened addition of the San Antonio River Greenway trail south of the Mission Rd trailhead.

As can be seen in the photos I posted yesterday, the river bed has been restored to a more natural configuration. That was the first step of the restoration process. Vegetation has been established along most of this new section to begin to stabilize the soil and minimize erosion when the water is high. A couple of large embayments are still being landscaped.

Today's photos are a closer look at the wildlife now living along this section of the river:

Another mile of the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Greenway trail opened this past Monday, July 2, 2012. This new section extends the trail south from the Mission Rd trailhead to the VFW Blvd trailhead.

As one of the signs along the trail points out, this is the largest river ecosystem restoration project in the U.S. Once again, congratulations to all the staff at the San Antonio River Authority on all they have accomplished on this project thus far. They have made great strides in creating a remarkable transformation along the river.

This new section of the river trail provided the perfect location for my walk on this July 4th, Independence Day holiday. I will present more details in tomorrow's post.

Love Every Moment, The Realization

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

On my walk yesterday, the distractions of the day began to fade away as soon as I was on the trail. My love for the moment quickly brought the experience to full realization:

I could easily have remained on the trail two or three times longer than I did. It was not easy to leave this experience. But alas, I made a mad dash back to the car just in time to return to the demands of the day.
