The field sparrow is one of the common passerine (perching) birds in Bexar County in the fall and winter. It prefers grassland and open brush land. Many of the species of sparrows can be difficult to distinguish one from another. The easiest way to distinguish the field sparrow from other sparrows is its bight pink bill and legs. It also has a distinct eye ring.
I photographed this particular sparrow on my walk on the Leon Creek Greenway on Wednesday, October 26 south of Grissom Rd. While it flew from one tree to another a couple times near the creek bed, it lingered long enough for me to take a series of photos:

Two of my previous walks on the Leon Creek Greenway have begun at the Bamberger Park trailhead, but I had yet to walk any but a very small portion of the natural surface trails within the park itself.Today's walk was along the dirt trails that more or less parallel Babcock Rd on the western edge of the park.
The sky was fairly heavily overcast this morning. The nature of the light, whether highly diffuse and a bit on the dim side as it was today, or the high contrast light of direct sunlight has a definite influence both on what stands out to me to be worth photographing as well as the mood conveyed through the photos. I think these photos communicate the experience of the walk very effectively.
I don't know how many miles of dirt trail there are in Bamberger Park, but I do know I will be doing at least a couple more walks exploring them. I was so fascinated with the location, I could easily have spent the whole day there today.

Today's photos:
I am tempted to write volumes about today's walk and photos, but that would only be a major distraction from the story the photos tell. Suffice it to say this is more photos than I would normally publish in a single post. I have tried a few editing variations to divide them into at least a couple of posts, but none of the alternatives convey the experience of my walk today as effectively as this single set.
