Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, Across the Salado Creek pedestrian bridge, halfway around the Meadow Loop Trail with a return
along the Panther Springs Creek trail
Today's photos:
Today's walk was a very good beginning for the year. I didn't take as many photos as I otherwise would have given the cold, damp, overcast weather, but this set of photos is a very effective representation of the experience.

Butterflies, Rippling Water, And So Much More

Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, Salado Creek Trail
Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, Salado Creek Trail
Today's photos:
I'm not sure why, but I was a bit surprised by the number of butterflies fluttering about along the trail today. It seemed like everywhere I looked there was a butterfly waiting to be photographed. When I stopped to take a photo of the prickly pear cactus next to the purple flowers, as soon as I focused the lens, a butterfly landed on the flowers.
Also, I found the number of pools of water along the creek bed a bit surprising. Water remains a longer period of time in pools where the creek bed has eroded to solid limestone. Apparently, there is more exposed bedrock limestone in this section of Salado Creek than I was aware of previously.
The four "abstract" photos in this series are actually reflections of trees on one of these pools with the camera lens focused on the surface ripples on the water, not on the reflections.

John James Park, Salado Creek Bed Dirt Trails
Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Today's photos:
If one takes the time to walk down the slope from the upland dirt trail into the Salado Creek bed trail on the eastern edge of John James Park, one enters a magical riparian woodland. The photos tell the story.
