A Comfortably Cool, Overcast Afternoon Along the River

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

San Antonio River, Mission Reach, Mission Rd Trailhead downstream

Today's photos:

Autumn has definitely arrived in South Texas. Most of the vegetation along the banks of the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River has gone to seed and already has or is going dormant. There is much riparian wildscape work remaining in the restoration project, but for the most part, this is how it is supposed to look at this point.

Many only see "weeds" along the river banks this time of year. It would not generally be considered picturesque. But for those willing to take the time to look more closely, there is still much beauty to be found. Scattered among the dormant grass, there are fall wildflowers. They are the main theme of this post. And this is only the first of at least three posts from my walk today.

Of Course There Were Butterflies Too (And More)

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

The flameleaf sumac was the highlight of my walk yesterday, quite literally, with the sunlight shining through the flame-red leaves. The sumac was featured in yesterday's post. The abundance of butterflies also continues to be impressive:

Leon Creek Greenway, Mainland Trailhead to Leon Vista Trailhead (and back)

Today's photos:

When the flameleaf sumac begin to "flame," it's autumn in South Texas. And today was an absolutely beautiful autumn day, perfect for an afternoon walk through the woods.

Wonder and Humility
"It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know the sense of wonder and humility."  -  Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder
