Serendipity

San Antonio River, Mission Reach, Roosevelt Park Trailhead downstream

Today's photos:

This series of photos is from the end of my walk today. There are two more sets of photos from the walk that I will post separately. This particular series came about, as so often happens in photography, serendipitously; purely as the result of a coincidence of timing and proximity.

In order to get the photo of the honey mesquite tree on the opposite bank of the river from the angle I desired, I had to get right up to the edge of the water and crouch lower to the ground. As I was getting into position, the mockingbird flew up and landed on the electrical line high above the opposite side of the river channel. Concerned that it would fly off, I took its photo before taking the photo of the tree.

I have photographed this mesquite tree before from other angles. The curve of its branches, typical of mesquites, has always fascinated me. This particular angle highlights these curves more effectively than my previous attempts.

When I first approached the edge of the river to position myself to photograph the tree, the mallard couple swam to the opposite side of the river. Mallards are monogamous. Once they have paired, the male and female usually remain in fairly close proximity of each other. Being crouched down at the rivers edge placed me at the perfect angle to photograph this couple.

As something of a side note, almost all, if not all, of the photographs I have taken and posted while on my walks have been from a full standing position. Given my lower extremity weakness, it is difficult for me to return to a standing position if I crouch down, so I try to avoid it. That is one of the greatest frustrations I have in doing nature photography.

Finally, after I managed to get back up to a standing position and was preparing to return to my car, the snowy egret flew in and landed a short distance upstream, almost as if to say, "Wait a minute. You can't leave without taking my picture."

River Birds in the Rain

Thursday, January 3, 2013

The weather this week has definitely presented a challenge for nature walks and added a higher degree of difficulty for nature photography. On my walk along the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Monday (December 31), the visibility was very poor with the fog and rain showers.

There were a number of times I was tempted to head back to the car because of the showers, but the birds kept attracting my attention and I kept on photographing them:

These birds include a juvenile black-crowned night heron, a great blue heron, a great egret, a turkey vulture and a pair of red-shouldered hawks.

Walking Into 2013

Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park, Across the Salado Creek pedestrian bridge, halfway around the Meadow Loop Trail with a return

Today's photos:

Today's walk was a very good beginning for the year. I didn't take as many photos as I otherwise would have given the cold, damp, overcast weather, but this set of photos is a very effective representation of the experience.

Beginning a New Year

Tuesday, January 1, 2013

My first walk of 2013 will be tomorrow. I'm not sure this evening where that walk will be, but it will probably be a trail I have walked in the past year.

There are a lot of miles of nature trails in Bexar County. I have seen varying numbers in different sources and I won't speculate on which is correct here. Whatever the number, I have walked a good many of the miles in the nineteen and a half months since beginning While on a Walk.

There are many miles of trails I have not walked yet, either because I just haven't gotten around to them, or because they recently opened. I am looking forward to walking these trails in this new year.

For today, here is another set of butterfly photos from my walk along the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River on Friday, December 7, 2012. This is a variegated fritillary (Euptoieta claudia) along with a white checkered-skipper (Pyrgus albescens) on firewheel flowers (Gaillardia pulchella Foug.):

A Short, Foggy, Damp Walk to Wrap Up 2012

Monday, December 31, 2012

San Antonio River, Mission Reach, Mission Rd Trailhead upstream

Today's photos:

When I arrived at the river this afternoon, the visibility was between a quarter mile and a mile. There was a light drizzle that at one point became a moderate shower. This was the first sustained rain we have had here in about three months and was long overdue. It was beautiful.

I did a quick edit of the photos I took today to give some idea of what it was like to be out by the River. There is another set of photos from this walk that I am planning on posting on Thursday.

So, this wraps up the walks for 2012. I am looking forward to 2013. Happy New Year!
