San Antonio River, Mission Reach, Theo Ave Trailhead downstream

Last week the newest section of the San Antonio River Mission Reach, Phase 2, Greenway trail opened with a trailhead on Theo Ave. This section of the trail goes downstream along the bank on the west side of the river, crosses Concepcíon Creek over a pedestrian bridge and joins the main greenway trail at the pedestrian bridge over the river just upstream from Mission Rd. The closest parking to the Theo Ave trailhead is in Concepcíon Park. This new section of trail completes a loop from the Concepcíon Park trailhead.

The new section of trail remains closer to the river bed than the trail along the east side of the river. It also provides a new angle of view to the large embayment area in this section of the river.

While I have become familiar with much of the regular flora and fauna inhabiting Bexar County and know where they are likely to be found, I really can't anticipate all that I will encounter on any given walk. My walk along the park segment of the San Antonio River a week ago on Monday, May 14 was an excellent example of this.

I was pleasantly surprised to happen across a very colorful male Wood Duck.  This bird looks like something straight out of a fairy tale:
