Mockingbirds are very observant birds, constantly watching over everything in their territory. There was one near the end of my walk this past Friday that flew into a tree next to the walkway and landed on a branch just above my eye level only six or seven feet from where I was approaching.
It watched intently as I slowly raised the camera and didn't fly away. They aren't afraid of much and will aggressively defend their territory, even attacking people if they feel there is a territorial threat. Fortunately, this one just posed for the camera:
