The Egyptian Geese; They Might Be Cute, But They're Not From Here (Not Even Close)

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

On my walk along the San Antonio River on Wednesday, February 8, I was surprised (even though I shouldn't have been) to see a brood of Egyptian Geese foraging on the river bank. It seemed rather ironic that they were there on this day following a major flood event the previous weekend. Their native habitat is Africa, particularly the Nile River Valley, an area well known for flooding.

Egyptian Geese were brought to the United States for their exotic, ornamental appearance to inhabit resort and golf course ponds. As so often happens with species introduced for that sort of purpose, they have escaped into the wild. While they have not flourished in the way so many invasive species have, they are becoming more widespread across North America.
